Welcome to Orange Insights!

Updated: 10 hours ago

Let me reintroduce myself.

I am Michelle Conway, and I serve as the Instructor of Entrepreneurship and Management for Misericordia’s College of Business. I chose to be an educator for 2 reasons: (1) I love to learn, and (2) I believe in the transformational power of higher education.

I am most passionate about helping people find their ‘why’ and aligning that ‘why’ with their chosen career. This became my mission after learning that you and I (working people) will spend nearly one-third of our lives working. Let me repeat that. If you enter the workforce, you will spend nearly one-third of your life working! What do you do for an additional third of your time? Sleep. That gives you one –third for everything else.

Thankfully, when I was informed that I would spend approximately 90,000 hours working, I was not overwhelmed with dread. Instead, I was grateful that I chose a career that I would voluntarily spend one-third of my life committed to-teaching. Whew, what a relief! But I immediately thought of friends, family members, and acquaintances who would often say things like, ‘I hate my job.’ Should we be doing something we hate for one-third of our lives? No... but it’s complicated. Numerous variables contribute to the careers that we choose: socio-economic factors, cultural expectations, skills, health and personal interests, just to name a few. But, if we have the privilege of being in a position where we can choose a career that is fulfilling and aligns with our ‘why,’ then I say let’s do it!

I have one intention with this column-to make you think.

Oh! One more thing. This column is titled ‘Orange Insights’ because (1) orange is my favorite color, and (2) represents warmth, energy and enthusiasm.

What’s your favorite color and why?

See what I did there? Made you think.
